The Story of the Eureka Riverwalk

The Eureka Riverwalk stands today as a testament to more than three decades of community vision, determination, and teamwork. What began as one man’s dream in 1990 has grown into one of Eureka’s most treasured landmarks — a place where residents and visitors alike can connect with nature, one another, and the spirit of this remarkable Montana town.

It all started with Dr. Andy “Doc” Ivy, a longtime local physician who first imagined a scenic walking path and park along the Tobacco River. He shared his vision with local landowners, including Lincoln Electric Cooperative and InterBel Telephone, planting the seed for what would become the Riverwalk.

Nearly a decade later, in the summer of 1999, that dream was rekindled. Over a friendly game of horseshoes, Doc Ivy and community member Buck Schermerhorn decided it was time to bring the idea to life. By 2000, a small committee had formed, early maps were drawn, and discussions with landowners began. That same year, the project was officially named the “Eureka Riverwalk.”

Momentum continued to build. In 2001, the team held public meetings, fundraisers, and community tours, and by October, the effort received a major boost — a $202,000 CTEP grant to begin planning and design. The following year, engineering firm TD&H Engineering joined the project, refining the trail’s layout and preparing detailed plans. By 2004, after countless revisions, approvals, and volunteer hours, construction began.

The dream finally took physical shape in the fall of 2004, when the Eureka Riverwalk officially opened to the public on October 20. The grand dedication followed in July 2005, marked with a community barbecue — a fitting celebration of the years of dedication that made the project possible.

Even after its opening, the Riverwalk continued to grow. In 2010, the installation of three new fitness stations added even more ways for residents to enjoy the trail.

Today, the Eureka Riverwalk is more than just a pathway — it’s a living legacy of community spirit, a place where the people of Eureka come together to enjoy the outdoors, celebrate their town, and honor the vision of those who made it all possible.
